The Rye baseball team bumped their win streak to six with a 13-2 victory over league opponent Pelham on Tuesday, reaching double-digit wins for the 2024-25 season.
The Garnets (10-3) have yet to lose a game since the annual spring training trip to Florida over two weeks ago, completing sweeps over Bronxville and Pelham and standalone victories over Hendrick Hudson, and Edgemont. Across the six games, Rye has generated 58 runs and only allowed four, including four shutouts.
The game against Pelham was tied 2-2 after the first inning, but consistent offensive production throughout was the difference-maker for Rye, which added a run in the third, four in the fourth, and six in the fifth.
Sophomore left fielder Luke Ontaneda went 3-for-3 at the plate, and junior right fielder Harry Ellis went 3-for-4, as nearly every player in the lineup had at least one hit.
“Luke continues to stay hot and has had some great at-bats with runners in scoring position,” said Rye coach Mike Bruno.
Freshman pitcher Clayton McCarthy got the win for the Garnets, giving up two unearned runs, two earned runs and no walks over four innings pitched. Senior Peter Davies saw one inning on the mound for the closer, striking out two batters in three batters faced.
“Clayton had some trouble in the first [inning], but it was nice to see him battle through it,” Bruno said. “First time he really has had to do that this season.”
RYE 16, EDGEMONT 0 – The Garnets had their highest-scoring game of the season Monday, highlighted by a 14-run second inning.
Junior Jackson Pineault kicked off the spree with a double, followed by a triple by Ontaneda. Seniors Charlie Rupp and Alex Schatz, and juniors Jamie Morris, Lucas London, and Nolan Hutson each added singles.
The Garnets’ bats have been hot, and the performance on the mound has matched that caliber.
Pitcher Jack Sheridan continues to be a driving force, earning the win for Rye by giving up zero runs, one walk, and three hits through 19 batters faced. The senior threw four strikeouts and 48 strikes in 65 total pitches.
“Jack Sheridan has continued to throw strikes,” Bruno said, “and we have been playing great defense behind him.”
The Garnets will look to sweep Edgemont, and pick up a seventh-straight win, in a rematch at 3 p.m. Saturday.
“Baseball is a game of momentum, so we are just happy we have been able to ride it a bit,” Bruno said.
