The Rye baseball team kept pace with Eastchester’s high-powered offense through the first four innings of the teams’ season-opener Tuesday before the Eagles finished the game off with three unanswered runs.
The Garnets scored one run in each of the first two innings and added another in the fourth to even the score. Eastchester scored twice in the sixth to reclaim the lead, plus an insurance run in the seventh to win 6-3 at Disbrow Park in Rye.
Rye junior Nolan Hutson had a strong start to the season with two hits, an RBI, and three stolen bases. He led the game off with a hit and scored Rye’s first run when junior Jackson Pineault drove a first-inning single down the left field line.
Eastchester scored twice in the second inning before Hutson drove in a run to cut Rye’s deficit to 3-2. Junior Jamie Morris singled to right field in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
Eastchester broke the game open in the top of the sixth when Dylan Retacco and Jayden Cassese each drove in runs with singles.
Rye pitchers Jack Sheridan and Peter Davies gave up six runs, but only two were earned. Sheridan started the game, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) over three innings, striking out three and walking one. Davies went four innings, giving up three runs (zero earned) on seven hits, striking out five and walking none.
Eastchester senior pitcher Justin Mylenski allowed seven hits and three runs (one earned) over six innings, striking out three and walking none.
Eastchester piled up 14 hits in the game, and Rye had eight, including a two-hit game for senior Charlie Rupp.
Rye plays its second game of the season at 4:30 p.m. today against Port Chester.
