Rye baseball (12-3) is still hanging onto its hot streak.
In their closest contest of the season so far, the Garnets came away with a 2-1 walk-off win Tuesday at Croton-Harmon. Rye has now won eight straight and remains undefeated since spring training three weeks ago.
Rye junior Lucas London was the hero in this one, responsible for both runs scored with two RBIs. The centerfielder opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly and notched a single in the bottom of the seventh tied at one to seal the deal.
“Lucas London had a great at-bat, which put himself in a position to get the game-winning hit,” said Rye coach Mike Bruno.
Rye’s two other hits were by sophomore leftfielder Luke Ontaneda and senior DH Vincent Sculti.
The strong pitching performance from both squads kept the game close down to the wire. Senior Jack Sheridan opened the game for Rye, allowing two hits and zero runs over five innings, and senior Peter Davies earned the win, giving up four hits and one run over the final two innings.
“I thought it was a great team win versus a very strong Class A opponent in Croton,” Bruno said of the Garnets’ outing against Croton-Harmon (11-6), which moved up a class after winning Class B last season. “Jack Sheridan and Peter Davies pitched excellent once again and we had some timely hitting.”
The Garnets will host Byram Hills (7-6) for their next game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, seeking a second win over the Bobcats this season.
