Over the past four weeks, the Rye boys soccer team has managed to do something few high school squads can pull off this late in the season: continue to get better. Not only are the Garnets playing a different brand of soccer than the start of the year, they are better today than they were at the start of the postseason.

Ask Section 9 champion New Paltz how it feels about Rye’s late-season progression. The Huguenots would say it’s legit, but no fun to play against. With a 5-0 rout Wednesday at Goshen, the Garnets advanced to the Class A state quarterfinals with ease. After bowing out in the tournament’s first round last year, the 2025 team seems poised to do even more damage.

Sophomore smooth operator Felix Wismer broke through for Rye’s first score with 21:48 to play in the first half. Four minutes later, junior Alec Dodge Terra polished off a corner kick by junior Kasen Scarperi to make it 2-0 Rye at the half.

In the second half, the Garnets took what little wind remained in the Huguenots’ sails, and kept it for themselves. Freshman Connor Dehmer scored an absolute rocket blast off a perfect pass from Wismer to make it 3-0 early in the second half. Dehmer later added a second goal, then Dodge Terra shocked the New Paltz goalie with a soaring free kick from about 40 yards out that landed in the back of the net. 5-0 Rye. Thank you for playing.

If the final score sounds familiar, it’s because the Garnets also hung five goals on Pleasantville in last Saturday’s section championship shutout.

Rye’s team speed, high-efficiency passing game, and unflappable postseason team demeanor will make it a serious threat to advance once more in the 11 a.m. Saturday quarterfinal matchup at Yorktown. To earn a spot in the semifinals, the Garnets will need to beat John Glenn, the Section 11 champions who knocked off defending Class A state champion Floral Park Memorial 2-1 on Wednesday.
