The Rye boys soccer team found the back of the net five times in a tight – but then it wasn’t – 5-2 victory Monday at Westlake.
Junior Kasen Scarperi scored with a left-footed, top-shelf Tomahawk steak from well outside the 18-yard box to give Rye a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. Seven minutes later, Scarperi struck again to make it 2-0.
Although looking a bit overmatched in the early going, Westlake, a Class A team from the Mount Pleasant Central School District, rallied nobly to tie the game 2-2 by the end of the first half.
Westlake’s second goal was scored on a rare indirect free kick from inside the penalty box, almost at point-blank range. Such a ruling by the referee is often the result of a back pass – intentional or not – to the goalie made inside the box. It’s not something soccer fans see every day, but it is a thing.
The second half was all Rye, as freshman Connor Dehmer, senior Alex Rojas, and sophomore Felix Wismer finished off the Garnets’ scoring for the day.
Three games into this young season, Rye’s midfield is beginning to make a name for itself. Seniors Shun Nagata and Lex Cox, junior Peter Wilmot, Wismer, and Alec Dodge Terra will be a handful for the rest of Class A all season long.
