Every game is a chapter in the story of a season. You prepare for the game, you play the game, you learn from the game, you move forward.

In Rye’s 72-60 road win Monday against an excellent Roosevelt squad, not only did Garnets put up the most points they’ve scored all year, they learned they have the skill and the depth to handle any team’s speed.

“Seventy-two points against 32 minutes of full-court pressing and half-court trapping is a good number for us,” said Rye coach Tom Proudian. “Our boys remained poised against their pressure for the entire game. We earned some easy buckets in transition off of turnovers. When we play good defense – like we did against Roosevelt – good things happen.”

Carson Miller led the way for Rye with 22 points. He was joined in double-figures by fellow seniors Henry Shoemaker (13) and Milo Shirakawa (10).

Rye (6-2) will host Roosevelt (6-3) in a rematch on Feb. 7. On that Saturday, the Garnets will once again have to contend with electric Roosevelt junior point guard Frank Mercedes, who dropped 31 points on the Garnets Monday, including 16-for-16 from the free-throw line. They’ll also get a second look at 6-foot-8 Roosevelt junior Lawrence Iyalekhue, a Boston College football commit.

Plenty of tough tests await Rye before then, beginning with a home game at 7 p.m. Friday against Suffern (8-1).
