Rye boys golf won its first Section 1 team championship in 10 years Monday, using a mix of low scores and depth that was a theme all season.
Sophomore Graham Erickson shot a 73, currently sitting at No. 2 on the individual leaderboard. He and four other Garnets made the cut and will continue playing in the second round next Tuesday, which will determine the section’s individual champions.
Joining Erickson in the final round at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel will be freshman Charlie Molloy, who shot a 77, sophomore Ryker Kevorkian (80), junior Derek Bisceglia (81), and sophomore Ryan Mascali (83). Sophomore Evan Dolan also contributed to Rye’s section-winning team score with an 89.
The team title was a goal coach Pat Romano talked about all season, especially after it was announced that the postseason format would change from nine to 18 holes. The more holes that are played, the more likely it is the best team will end up on top, and over the course of the season, it became clear that team was the Garnets, who went 16-1. The lone loss came to Harrison by a single stroke.
Romano said the team championship was Rye’s first since 2016 and the fourth in the past 32 years.
Mamaroneck, the section runner-up, had two golfers score in the 70s, and three individuals advanced, but the Tigers didn’t have the top-to-bottom team depth to surpass the Garnets on the leaderboard.
At the end of play next Tuesday, the top nine individual golfers in the section will qualify for the New York state tournament.
