Rye boys lacrosse beat Bronxville 11-5 in a battle of Section 1 leaders Tuesday, scoring 45 seconds into the game and never looking back.
The Broncos (8-3), who sit atop the Section 1 Class D standings, were still within striking distance after the first quarter, trailing 3-1. Senior captain Jack Levine and junior Luke Denvir anchored a stingy Garnet defense in front of sophomore keeper Sam LaMonte, who finished with 10 saves for Rye (7-3), the Section 1 Class C front-runners.
Sophomore Will Niejadlik and junior Charlie Brady both had hat tricks, combining for more than half of the Garnets’ goals. Senior Henry Shoemaker led Rye in assists, with five, while Niejadlik and senior Carson Miller each had a pair.
Shoemaker also scored twice, with other goals coming from junior Henry Gilroy, senior Thomas Goldszer, and Miller.
The Garnets led 5-1 at halftime and 7-3 after the third quarter before finishing off their sixth win in the past seven games. LaMonte, who understudied all last year under now-Georgetown Hoya goalie Ty Ramachandran, appears to be getting mighty comfortable between those pipes. Tough news for the rest of Section 1.
Rye’s four-game road trip continues at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Class A opponent Scarsdale (5-4). First-year coach Jeremy Guski says preparation for the stretch away from home is no different from any other week.
“Our goal is to stack great days on top of great days regardless of who or where we play,” Guski said. “Our mindset doesn’t change for away games. We want to make sure we’re all on the same page and playing as a unit. Our opponent may dictate slight strategic adjustments along the way, but our focus is on being Rye wherever we go.”
The Garnets won’t be back at Nugent Stadium until a must-see matchup under the lights on May 9 against next-door neighbor Mamaroneck, currently the No. 4-ranked team in New York Class A.
