Coming into Thursday’s game against Rye, Yorktown’s boys lacrosse team had won seven straight. The Section 1 Class B leaders had scored at least six goals in every one of their 12 games this season.
The Garnets broke both of those trends, and the Huskers’ spirit, from start to finish in a 9-2 rout. Rye (9-4) built a 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Junior Charlie Brady led Rye with three goals, while sophomore Will Niejadlik and junior Henry Gilroy each added two. Seniors Carson Miller and Henry Shoemaker both scored as well. The nine-goal total matched the most Yorktown (10-3) has allowed all season.
Even Hunter Mezzatesta, a five-star recruit who signed with the University of Virginia, couldn’t slow the Garnets, who entered the final quarter with a 7-2 lead before adding their final two goals in the fourth. Meanwhile, sophomore keeper Sam LaMonte made eight saves while defending Rye’s net.
The win was Rye’s eighth in the past nine games. The Garnets have three regular-season games left, starting at 7 p.m. Saturday against Mamaroneck (9-3) in Nugent Stadium. It could be one of New York lacrosse’s top games of the year, pitting the leaders of the Section 1 Class A and Class C standings. Neither team has lost to a Section 1 opponent all season.
