Rye boys soccer went on a strong run over the last two weeks, winning four of its five games and improving to a record of 6-1.
The team edged out Pearl River 2-1 at home, then traveled to Edgemont, where they won handily, 6-0, in a non-league matchup. Senior captains striker Kaden Zion and goalkeeper Ayden Breen led the way.
After starting the season undefeated through four games, Rye ran into a buzz saw against Tappan Zee — the same team that had eliminated them from the sectional playoffs two years ago. Tappan Zee, capitalizing on a series of Rye errors, won 6-0.
Rye rebounded with a 2-1 win over Eastchester on Sept. 19.
Overall, Coach Jared Small has been pleased with his group’s performance so far.
He said he believes the team’s greatest success has been, “finding different ways to be successful. We’ve won games through attractive, purposeful possession-oriented soccer and we’ve won games through grittiness and tenacity. We will continue to work on developing both of these approaches.”
Zion and Breen have starred, with juniors Alex Rojas, Lex Cox, and Shun Nagata contributing significantly as well. The future looks bright; underclassmen Peter Wilmot, Louis Koite, Kasen Scarperi, and Felix Wismer have combined for six goals and eight assists, providing depth and production.
This week, the team was to face Byram Hills and then play Pelham on Saturday, Sept. 28.
