Winter Storm Fern dropped roughly a foot of snow on Rye and the community is still digging its way out as both local school districts announced two-hours delays for Tuesday.
The Rye City and Rye Neck school districts both announced the Tuesday delay with notices sent out to the community on Monday evening. In an email to the school community, Rye City Schools Superintendent Patricia Murray wrote that due to “freezing temperatures, potentially resulting in hazardous road conditions in the early morning hours,” all schools would operate on a delayed scheduled on Tuesday.
Roughly 12 inches of snow blanketed Rye, based on estimates from the National Weather Service. The mammoth snowstorm also brought treacherous conditions — stretching from New Mexico to New England.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for the lower Hudson Valley — including Westchester County — that remained in effect until Monday night.
The NWS also issued a snow and ice advisory for all of southeast New York, northern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut starting late Saturday night through Monday afternoon.
The school districts quickly made the decision Sunday — as snow accumulations began to build — to cancel classes on Monday.
