Schools Superintendent Eric Byrne announced early Thursday morning that the district had shifted from a planned two-hour delay to closure with poor weather conditions expected through the afternoon.
Byrne sent an email out Thursday morning updated his decision to cancel school for the day.
“The most current forecast is calling for continued snow and freezing rain until early afternoon, therefore the Rye City Schools and offices will now be closed for today,” Byrne wrote. “I had hoped that a 2-hour delay would be sufficient, but the updated forecast with freezing rain presents too much risk for unsafe driving conditions.”
The district’s after-school activities and all sports have been canceled also.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter weather advisory will remain in effect beginning at 4 a.m. Thursday until 1 p.m. Mixed precipitation is expected with snow and sleet accumulations of up to two inches as well as a light glaze of ice.
Hazardous conditions and slippery roads are expected to impact the morning commute, the NWS said.
