A number of teachers at Rye Country Day School have been busy attending various conferences and workshops around the country this summer, while others have been collaborating on curriculum revisions on campus.
Lower School professional development has focused on the Responsive Classroom training, grade 4 expository writing, and use of iPad applications. In the Middle School, teachers have been working on expository writing, revisions to the grade 8 math courses, and iPad applications.
Upper School English teachers are refining the writing lab program for grades 9 and 10 and revising the grade 9 Biology course. Several teachers are also exploring the use of digital texts for their courses.
A major Public Purpose initiative is being launched this year at Rye Country Day as well. The school hired Ms. Lynn Sullivan, formerly Dean of Community Relations at King School in Connecticut, to serve as Director of Public Purpose. In this role Ms. Sullivan will coordinate the school’s community service programs, community outreach efforts and partnerships, and service learning curriculum development. The latter involves connecting service projects to specific topics throughout the K-12 curriculum.
Summer campus construction projects included installation of a 25 kW solar panel system on the Upper School roof; renovation of a Middle School science lab; replacement of the Lower School artificial turf play area; paving of the athletic fields parking lots; and relocation of the Business Office to 11 Grandview Avenue.
