RyeDerby-opener

At the annual Rye YMCA Derby, April 29, sunny skies and cool weather worked in runners’ favor, resulting in excellent times.

In the 5-Mile Track and Field sanctioned race, the winner was Mongistu Nebsi, age 34 (23:44); the female winner was Bekelech Bedada, age 21 (27:41).

The top Rye female runner was Heather Baden, age 36, (34:57), and the top Rye male runner was Conor O’Driscoll, age 50, (28:28).

The winner of the 5K was Mauricio Monteil Soli of Rye, age 35 (17:37); the female winner was Brooke Garden, age 44 (20:52). Natalie Weiner, age 10, placed 2nd (18:50) and was the top female runner from Rye.

The Y added Healthy Kids Day to the program a few years back, and activity rules the day. Kids enjoyed sliding down an inflatable fire engine, climbing to the top of a tower, practicing batting or golf swings, and completing the 1-mile fun run.

The day was made possible through the generous support of hundreds of sponsors and volunteers. Proceeds help support the Rye Y financial assistance program, outreach, and teen programming. Complete race results, as well as a video, can be viewed at ryeymca.org/derby
