Five Rye girls competed in the USA Hockey National Championships April 2-6 in Coral Springs, Fla.
The Mamaroneck-based 14U AAA Elite Girls Stateline Hawks were one of three teams in New York and the only local team to play in the tournament.
Rye residents on the team are eighth-graders Madison French (Rye Country Day), June Kleiner (Winward), CC Crotty (Midland), Akina Brittain (Midland), and ninth-grader Callie Hill (Greenwich Country Day).
Kleiner and Hill scored in the team’s first game in Florida, a 2-0 win April 2 over Honeybaked Hockey, a team from Michigan. French had an assist in the next game, a 3-2 loss to Casco Bay Mariners (Maine). The team lost its final game 3-0 against Minnesota Walleye.
Each of the five Rye girls grew up playing boys hockey with the Rye Rangers and made the switch to play for the girls team this year as the sport continues to grow.
The Stateline Hawks are ranked No. 17 nationally and the No. 1 team in New York for Tier II girls hockey, according to MyHockeyRankings.com.
