Over the course of a season, you have to take the good with the bad. Some days, it’s effortless. Some days, not much goes right. In a 15-6 loss to Don Bosco Prep, Saturday proved to be a learning day for Rye.
Rye (6-3) knew this mid-season contest would be a test. The Ironmen, who traveled to Rye from Ramsey, N.J., are the 23rd-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic region (Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Delaware, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania).
Even with temperatures in the low 40s and a cold rain falling the entire afternoon, Rye junior Charlie Brady got hot early, scoring twice in the first four minutes for a quick 2-0 lead.
After another Brady goal, then one more each from sophomore Will Niejadlik and junior Henry Gilroy, Bosco clung to a 6-5 lead in the final minute of the first half.
But when Bosco junior – and Loyola University commit – Heston Halesworth scored to give the Ironmen a 7-5 cushion with only 10 seconds remaining, Rye never recovered.
The second half was one of rough sledding for the Garnets. Nothing worked. Bosco’s lead swelled to 12-6 after three quarters, and 15-6 at the final whistle.
Shake it off. Move forward.
Next up is a game against the Section 1 Class D leaders, set for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bronxville (8-2).
