Rye field hockey scored late to force overtime against Horace Greeley, but the Quakers beat the Garnets by a single goal once again.
Greeley’s game-winner came three minutes into the extra period, ending the game with a 2-1 final score Tuesday at Nugent Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Quakers struck first four minutes before halftime. Rye evened the score with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter.
The early-season contest was a rematch of last year’s section championship, which Greeley won 1-0. Both teams had significant roster turnover in the offseason, with Rye graduating 11 seniors.
Greeley remains unbeaten at 5-0, and Rye is off to a 1-3 start, but Tuesday’s narrow overtime loss shows just how close the Garnets are to breaking through.
The other losses were against Mamaroneck, one of the top teams in the state, and John Jay-Cross River, also 2-1 in overtime.
A game scheduled for Saturday against Long Island power Garden City has been postponed. Rye’s next game is Sept. 23 at Byram Hills.
