The top-seeded Rye field hockey team advanced to the section semifinals in dominant fashion, shutting out Nanuet 5-0 Tuesday in Nugent Stadium.
The Garnets largely maintained possession in the offensive zone, allowing just four shots on goal for the ninth-seeded Golden Knights.
“We had really great ball movement this evening,” said Rye coach Valerie Perkins. “They did a really great job of keeping the ball in our attacking zone for most of the game and utilizing quick passes.”
Senior forwards Beau Whaling and Issy Mann led the team with two goals apiece, and senior defender Thea Fairhurst contributed a goal as well. Seniors Sienna Myers and Kendall Bahl, and sophomore Robyn Wilmont each had an assist.
To nobody’s surprise, senior starting goaltender Chloe Holden had an immaculate performance in net, allowing zero goals to record her ninth shutout of the season.
“She is a force in goal,” Perkins said. “She does a really great job at staying involved. She communicates so much to our defense and midfield. It’s a good feeling knowing that she’s in goal for us.”
Rye (15-2) will host No. 4 John Jay Cross River (13-4) in the semifinals Thursday at Nugent Stadium, with the winner advancing to Section 1 championship Saturday at Lakeland.
