Entering Tuesday afternoon, all of Rye’s varsity sports had combined for an undefeated start to the fall season. Even for an athletic department as accomplished as Rye’s, it’s not realistic for every team to maintain a perfect record.
Field hockey and volleyball became the first Garnet teams to suffer losses Tuesday. Field hockey fell 6-0 at Mamaroneck, and volleyball was swept at Ardsley.
After beating Clarkstown, last year’s Class A section runner-up, 3-0 in the season-opener, the Garnet field hockey team was shut out by the Tigers, the defending Class A section champs.
Volleyball, which dropped just one set in its 2-0 start, lost on the road 25-23, 25-16, 25-20. The Garnets beat Ardsley in the section semifinals last year on the way to their first Section 1 crown.
Stat leaders for the Garnets on Tuesday were senior Amelie Modesto with 30 assists, senior Margo Ehrenberg with 25 digs, and junior Katie Hillis and senior Lexi Kessner with nine kills apiece.
Volleyball will play its home-opener at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Dobbs Ferry. Field hockey’s next game is at the same time, on the road against John Jay-Cross River.
