Rye’s girls lacrosse team defeated last year’s Section 1 Class B runner-up with ease on Saturday. Now, they’ll see if they can do the same against the defending section champions.
Nine different players scored for the Garnets in a 14-5 rout of Horace Greeley at Nugent Stadium. In a battle of teams that made the Section 1 championship last year, Rye (4-3) proved it’s far better equipped for another deep postseason run.
Many of Rye’s goal scorers played big parts in the team’s run to the 2025 Section 1 Class C title game. But it was a newcomer, freshman keeper Dylan Ehrlich, who stymied Greeley (3-2) most, making 10 saves.
Senior Beau Whaling and junior Mary Ebeling each had three goals and two assists, and freshman Rose Denvir also had a multi-score game. Other goals came from seniors Mia Howson and Annie Toulouse, junior Blake Sasse, sophomores Stella Maresca and Emma Giannetti, and freshman Caroline Kmetz.
Rye scored the first four goals of the game, shutting out Greeley until the final 45 seconds of the first quarter. Two minutes into the second quarter, Rye’s lead grew to 7-1. With eight minutes remaining in the game, the Garnets were up 11-3 before a couple of late scores by the Quakers.
Rye improved to 4-0 against New York opponents, with all three losses coming against out-of-state competition. The Garnets are off for a week, when they host Yorktown (7-1) at 11 a.m. April 25. The Huskers beat Greeley 18-6 to win the section title a year ago. Rye beat both teams in 2025, and will look to do the same this season on consecutive Saturdays.
