After giving up a goal in the opening 10 seconds, Rye girls lacrosse scored 20 straight times in a 20-1 regional final win Sunday over Roundout Valley.
The gap in competitiveness between sections was clear, as the Section 1 champion Garnets (16-4) rolled past the Ganders (10-6), who were fresh off claiming the Section 9 title. By the end of the first quarter, a running clock went into effect as Rye took a 9-1 lead. At halftime, the lead was 15-1.
Rye’s boys and girls lacrosse teams are both just two wins away from claiming Class C state titles, although the next round will be a step up in intensity, as both Garnet squads face powerhouses from the lacrosse hotbed of Long Island.
Next up for the Rye girls is a state semifinal game at 2 p.m. Friday at SUNY Cortland. Rye will face Section 11 champion Sayville (19-0), which beat South Side 8-5 in Saturday’s Long Island regional championship.
If Rye can hand Sayville its first loss of the season, it will play in the Section C championship game at 2 p.m. next Saturday on the same field at SUNY Cortland.
