After a ceremony honoring its seniors, Sophie Brett, Caroline Stevens, and Sally Eggers, first-year coach Michelle Mason’s team went to work quickly against Mahopac at Nugent Field May 8.
Brett was nearly perfect in the first half of Rye High’s Varsity Girls Senior Night Lacrosse game against Mahopac. With a dominant Rye defense in front of her, half of the shots on goal went wide, but she did have to deal with five, and she came up with four huge stops, two of which were penalty shot saves.
Rye’s offense was equally impressive, putting six points on the board before Mahopac could respond. The Garnets went into the second half up 6-1, with goals from attackers Maren Wydra and Ellie Hedges, midfielder Mackenzie Chimento, and defender Ella Buckley, including one off a beautiful pass from midfielder Mali White.
Mahopac’s offense came alive in the second to make it a much closer game, with goals from Ava Jennings, Avery Przymylski, Amanda Beberman, and Mia Del Bene. But it wasn’t enough to stop the Garnets, who kept the lead all the way through, with second-half goals from midfielder Lilly Whaling and Ellie Hedges.
The 9-6 win brought the Garnets’ season record to 4-1.
The seniors, already exuberant after the win, were further delighted after the game when several were surprised with “promposals.” Their happy shouts filled the stadium, in a heartwarming sign that the kids are not only getting their sports back, but also their high school traditions.
