Rye brought a 4-3 record into their September 28 match against visiting Pelham. Though the Garnets dropped all three singles to the Pelicans, they dominated doubles to come away with the tie.
Sophomore Charlotte Lorraine and senior Cassidy Pagen dropped the opening set of their First Doubles match, 6-4. Cassidy said, “Going into the second set, Charlotte and I decided we would go big or go home. We went big.” The pair won the second set and took the tiebreaker 10-8.
The Third Doubles team of sisters Brooke and Taylor Gori won their match 6-2, 6-3. And the Fourth Doubles team of juniors Hannah Cali and Sophia Karl easily won 6-1, 6-2.
So, the contest came down to the Second Doubles match with Rye seniors Abigail Davies, she of the strong backhand, and the volleying power of Ryan Wade. They took the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6, while the Pelham pair came back to win the second, 6-2. It was already past 7 p.m. and getting dark, so the teams agreed to call it a draw.
Head Coach Tony Campbell said afterwards, “This was almost a duplicate of our first match against Pelham. We won all four doubles matches after dropping the three singles then, too.”
