Rye High Hockey Triumphs at Home, Takes a Drubbing on the Road

The Rye Garnets varsity hockey team has seen good times and bad in recent weeks.

The team delivered on its home ice at Playland Ice Arena on Jan. 10, securing a decisive victory against the Mamaroneck Tigers. In a thrilling first period, the Garnets set the tone with goals from Ivan Vasyuta, assisted by Henry Bagley, and a solo effort from Dean Kim. Rye led 2-0.

In the second period, Kim found the net once again, this time assisted by Vasyuta, and the Garnets were up 3-2 at the start of the third. Two more goals sealed the victory, with Vasyuta contributing his second of the night and Seth Dorfman adding the other, for a 5-2 win.

Then came the Suffern Mounties, who were celebrating Senior Night on their home ice.

A closely contested first period ended with the score tied 0-0. But then Suffern High took control of the game, established a 3-0 lead after two periods and closed out the Jan. 12 game with a convincing 6-0 victory.

Next on the schedule for Rye High’s hockey team: Pelham, an away game on Jan. 26 (rescheduled from Jan. 16 by bad weather); Scarsdale, an away game on Jan. 27; and Suffern again, this time at home, on Jan. 31.
