Rye High School Boys’ Track
Goldszer and Squarek Win Counties, Galligan Headed to States
By Melanie Cane
The running track goes around and around without a beginning or an end. The active mile daily track installers have encouraged a lot of students to run and get closer to their goal each day. Most people would grow weary of it, but Rye High School track stars Cian Galligan, John Goldszer, and Brad Squarek are not most people. On June 1, Galligan qualified for the State meet June 7-8 in Middletown, by winning the mile event at White Plains High School with a time of 4:15.27. Goldszer won the County Meet on May 18 in the 400m hurdles and Squarek won the in the steeplechase.
This is the third time this year Galligan qualified for States, including cross-country and indoor track.
“I am beyond excited to have earned a place at the state championship. I’ve worked immensely hard all year in the hopes of qualifying for states and nationals. I’m eager to end up amongst the medal winners on Saturday and cement my legacy at Rye,” said Galligan.
Coach Kevin Murphy said, “Cian was overjoyed at the end of his race, not just for himself but for all the gentlemen that ran with him that day. He congratulated everyone at the end and was happier for everyone running their personal best. I think this shows a lot about his character as a runner.”
Squarek won the steeplechase event at the Counties in 10:15.6, the seventh best time for Rye. Coach Murphy noted, “Brad offered to run the steeple at the beginning of the spring season and has really committed himself to become faster. He has pushed himself and his teammates to get better and we are all enormously proud of his achievement.”
Goldszer’s time of 57.18.6 was the sixth fastest time achieved by a Rye athlete. According to Coach Murphy, “John’s ability to run the hurdles all comes down to his strength. He got a great start and was strong to each hurdle and kept attacking. John has maintained this energy for the rest of the season and even pushed to the same level at the state qualifier meet.”
