Rye teens now have a space of their own at the Rye Free Reading Room, thanks to a generous donation from Mildred Weissman, a longtime Rye resident, and a State construction grant. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place May 21 to officially open the new Teen Center on the library’s second floor.
The space was designed by KG&D Architects. They had planning assistance from teens in the community. Creative Library Concepts installed the furnishings. Longtime resident Nick Everett managed the construction project, which began last fall.
The center has state-of-the-art computers for research and digital projects and a large screen for instruction and entertainment. Right outside is the desk of YA Librarian Bettyjane Surabian, who is there to help teens.
At the ceremony, Director Kitty Little was happy to report teens are already playing Garage Band on the Mac computers and going to anime sites. “Computer literacy comes in many forms.”
Also new on the other side of the second floor is the Conference Room, an ideal place for tutoring and small group gatherings. Reserve a time.
