Every year for the past 16, the Rye Lions Club has recognized Rye High School senior scholar/athletes. An athlete is selected each month by the Athletic Department based on outstanding achievement in their sport, academic standing, and character. In May, RHS students vote for Athlete of the Year from among the nine athletes chosen. All the athletes are honored, and the name of the winner announced at the annual dinner at The Osborn. It is a family affair and one that the coaches and RHS administrators look forward to as much as the student athletes.
At this year’s dinner, June 9, guests heard a talk by sports psychologist John R. Wooden. His topic was success.
As each Athlete of the Month was honored, the respective coach went to the podium to offer a description of his or her qualities and strengths. Master of Ceremonies Dave Heller and RHS Athletic Director Rob Castagna presented the Athlete of the Year trophy to Shane O’Malley, one of the stars of the football team.
The evening ended on a new high note, with the athletes donating the $50 gifts from The Lions Club to a charity of their choice.
