Dorothy (Dorie) Hubbard Lobl died on Nov. 5, 2025, of complications from pneumonia at Greenwich Hospital. She was 85 years old.
Born on Jan. 13, 1940, Dorie grew up in Rye, where she attended Rye Country Day School and Choate Rosemary Hall in Greenwich, Conn. After graduation, in 1958, Dorie enrolled in a one-year program with The Experiment in International Living, where she lived with a Dutch family in Holland.
At the end of the program, Dorie returned to the U.S. by boat. One night, she found herself unable to sleep and decided to take a walk on the deck, where she came face to face with one of the program’s chaperons: a dashing young college graduate named Herbert (Herb) Lobl. One year later, on Sept. 12, 1960, Dorie and Herb married at Christ’s Church in Rye. The joyful spirit of their wedding reception at the American Yacht Club could not be dampened, even by Hurricane Donna, which was raging outside the club that evening.
In 1964, Herb, Dorie, and their three-month-old son moved to Paris for Herb’s job, as part of a rotation they expected to last two years. That initial two-year stint saw the birth of Dorie and Herb’s daughter, Michelle, and eventually stretched into 30 years of married life as expats in Paris.
During this time, Dorie enrolled in remote courses at Sarah Lawrence College, where she earned her B.A. Dorie also found meaning in her work at the American Aid Society of Paris, a social service agency housed within the US. Embassy that provided financial assistance to indigent U.S. citizens stranded in Paris.
Upon Herb’s retirement from Davis Polk, he and Dorie moved to Nantucket, Mass., where they lived for 10 years. In 2004, they moved to a house in Purchase, N.Y., then later moved to The Osborn in 2020.
Throughout her life, Dorie was Herb’s devoted and loving partner. They shared many of the same interests, including a love of opera and a passion for travel.
Dorie is survived by her brother, Peter Hubbard; her son, Peter Lobl; her daughter, Michelle Lobl New; and her four grandchildren, Samantha, Benjamin, Liam, and Danielle.
