Ekim Buyuk and Diana King won the first Sectional Doubles title for Rye Neck High School October 19 by defeating Eastchester 6-3, 6-2. Coach Mark Canno summed up their win: the girls served perfectly and made very few unforced errors.
The day before the finals, King and Buyuk, both juniors, met the Keio team that had beaten them in the semis a week earlier in Conference finals. Determined to avenge the Conference 3 loss, the girls fought with every fiber in their being. In the first set, which lasted nearly and hour and a half, with each point lasting 20 to 30 hits, Buyuk and King won 7-5 in a tiebreaker. Through flawless play in the second set, they crushed the opposition 6-1 for the victory.
Coach Canno, who has been coaching Buyuk and King for four years, is very proud of “his girls.” Buyuk and King play first and second singles, respectively, for Rye Neck, but have played as the first doubles team in Sectionals for the past four years. Canno said the match against Keio was their best yet. “Their teamwork and net play has gotten so much better this season.”
Buyuk and King will travel to Latham, New York, to play in the State Doubles Championship with the top 32 teams from the state on November 1. Last year the duo made the quarterfinals. Canno thinks they have a good shot at bringing home the championship trophy this year.
