The 11-1 Panthers golf team won the Conference 3 League A title for the second consecutive year, beating their nemesis, Briarcliff, by five strokes at Metropolis on May 14. Rye Neck had lost to Briarcliff on April 10, and when they met again, the teams were tied for first place; Briarcliff’s only loss was to Croton earlier in the season.
The last time the Panthers won back-to-back league titles was 1982-1985, when Mark Canno, who has coached the team for the last ten years, played on the team.
“Winning the title was a total team effort,” said the very proud coach. “Ryan Morningstar, our top player, was ranked third in the league and 22nd in the Section. Luke Murphy also had a strong season and qualified for Sectionals for the first time. Nicholas Beer made All-League and played great in the close matches.”
Coach Canno knows it will be tough to repeat with Morningstar and Murphy graduating, but looks forward to the challenge in 2015. “We have some really strong freshman and sophomores.”
