Rye Quarterback Carson Miller hit Henry Shoemaker with a 75-yard touchdown pass on the team’s very first offensive snap and the Garnets didn’t look back en route to a 48-22 dismantling of East Ramapo.
The atmosphere was electric as Rye traveled to Rockland’s Ramapo High School Friday night with a near full house and an energetic band matching the fast-paced action on the field. The game was characterized by a plethora of big plays, which went mostly in the Garnets’ favor.
The offensive explosion propelled Rye to their most points scored in a game in nearly five years — dating back to a 2019 regional quarterfinal matchup against Auburn when the Garnets dropped 49.
In his second career start, Miller went 7 for 10 with 316 passing yards, marking a whopping 45 yards per completion to go along with four touchdown passes. Through two games, Miller’s 605 passing yards are the most of any public school quarterback in New York state.
“We executed extremely well which led to some big plays downfield,” Miller said following the win.

After opening the game with a deep touchdown pass and the defense recording a three-and-out on East Ramapo’s first drive, the Garnets would score again on a Chris Iuliano rushing touchdown. Miller kept the drive alive with multiple completions to three different receivers.
The Garnets would go on to score 34 points against the Titans within the first 19 minutes of the game — including scores from seniors Ty Ramachandran, Archer Fenton, and Tucker Hess.
They led 34-8 at the half, despite Miller only completing six passes.
Friday’s game was the season opener for the Titans, and the first under a new program model combining Spring Valley and Ramapo players into one Class AA team.
In the third quarter, Fenton’s punt return touchdown pushed the Garnets lead to 41-15. And on their next offensive possession, Hess caught his second receiving touchdown of the night.

Fenton and Hess’ performances at the wide receiver position were the best in years. Hess’ 158 receiving yards Friday were the third highest in a game over the last three seasons, and Fenton joined Jack O’Callaghan, in 2010, as the only recent Garnets with a receiving and punt return touchdown in the same game.
Defensively, the team was led by senior Connor Brady, who’s quickly established himself as a force. Brady led the team with eight tackles, and now has 13 on the season — two more than he had all of last season.
“The team is really starting to connect and it’s amazing that we are all on the same page this early in the season,” said Miller.
Through their first two games the Garnets have scored 79 points, the most by a Rye football team since 2016, and have now started 2-0 in six of the last seven seasons.
The Garnets are set to enter league play Friday, Sept. 20, against Clarkstown North.
