Around 6 a.m. Thursday, a Rye police officer on patrol observed a suspected mail theft from a mailbox in front of the U.S. Post Office at 41 Purdy Ave. The officer observed an individual run from the mailbox, cross the street, and enter a BMW X7.

A video released by the Rye Police Department shows the officer attempting to stop the vehicle, which turned around and fled from the area. A pursuit was initiated but subsequently terminated due to the vehicle’s reckless operation and existing road conditions, police said.

Rye PD reminds residents to take precautions when mailing checks or other sensitive items. Whenever possible, residents are encouraged to bring outgoing mail directly inside the post office rather than leaving it in an exterior collection box.

Residents who observe suspicious activity around mailboxes or post offices are encouraged to contact the police department.
