The Rye Record has been accepted into an incubator program run by Report for America, a national nonprofit dedicated to creating financially sustainable news organizations.
As a participant in Report for America’s Accelerator Program, Record staff will receive coaching and training and the newspaper will be able to accept tax-deductible contributions thanks to fiscal sponsorship by Report for America and The GroundTruth Project.
“We are thrilled to have been accepted into this prestigious program and have already started to reap benefits from working closely with Report for America’s staff,” said Jon Elsen, The Record’s editor in chief and co-publisher.
“We’ve seen firsthand the impact of helping newsrooms tell their stories to help their communities better understand the role and benefit of local news,” said Morgan Baum, vice president of local news sustainability at Report for America. The Accelerator Program is designed to help newsrooms “not just survive, but thrive and grow,” she said.
The Record has appointed David Hessekiel, a longtime Rye resident and journalist, to be the newspaper’s director of community development.
This fall, Hessekiel will spearhead The Record’s efforts to garner support from readers who recognize the value of having a strong community news organization.
