Shannon Haines and Emerson Roche joined The Rye Record as interns on May 20 as a part of Rye High School’s four-week senior internship program.
Haines, executive editor of Rye High’s newspaper, Garnet & Black, has been freelance writing for The Record for the past five months and said she was looking for further journalistic experience. Roche, president of Rye High’s literary magazine, Zephyr, wanted to broaden her scope of writing.
Both interns adore reading, writing, and editing. Drawn to their English classes throughout high school, they enjoy analyzing both fiction and nonfiction. Haines has taken summer courses at New York University, Columbia University, and Harvard University in various English fields, and Roche has attended Columbia’s spring press conventions.
The internship program challenges students to write stories, rewrite press releases, and cover local news stories and features. Both Haines and Roche have covered local events and are working on developing their own story ideas. The interns also are attending editorial meetings where they can observe how the newspaper is planned and put together, and where they are learning editing techniques.
Haines, who also studies Spanish and ballet, will attend Hamilton College in the fall and plans to major in English literature with a minor in linguistics. She hopes to become a copyeditor.
Roche will major in English and comparative literature at St. Andrews University in Scotland. She plans a career in publishing and literature.
