Thanks so much to 7–year-old Emma Lunstead for sending us her story. Hats off to this special girl who is already taking action in her school to encourage others to adopt rather than shop.

February 22 was the one-year anniversary of Gotcha Day. That was the day where we met our new pup, Darby. Darby came all the way to New York from Louisiana on a big truck driven by Greg from Rescue RoadTrips. On that day, I remember being nervous but I was so excited to meet her. When Darby came off the truck she looked very nervous too. It was very new to all of us.
Since that time, Darby and I have had the best time ever. We played catch, we swam, we took lots of walks, and we played at the beach together. Even though she can be naughty at times, I am so happy Darby’s now a member of our family. It’s hard to remember when she wasn’t.
Every time I hear stories of dogs that need homes, I want to adopt all of them. My mom said our house is full with our dog, cat, and two fish. So instead, I make little stands to raise money to help the animals. Last year, I helped out at Pet Rescue in Harrison when a truck full of 22 dogs made the trip from the South. The money I raised helped to pay for the ride to New York.
When the dogs arrived, we took turns walking all of them. They were so happy to finally be out of their crates. It was so hard to leave the dogs. I wanted to take all of them home. My mom told me that one of the pups we saved was adopted by a Rye family, the Brady’s. It makes me happy to see one of the dogs I helped rescue with a nice family that will love him.
My friends and I are now starting a club at school called the Pet Club. We are trying to help any animals that need it. It makes me feel proud for saving my dog and I hope to save lots of other dogs (and cats) too.
