Rye High School’s crew teams have six new captains and 50 team members. The boys’ captains are Alex Martin and Ross Mulkerrin, both seniors, and Grant Janart, a junior. The girls’ captains are Leslie Gallagher and Olivia Iles, both juniors, and Julia Davis, a sophomore.
The team competed in its first regatta, The Greenwich Invitational, April 6. The Garnets had 12 boats with 46 rowers. The big wins were the boys 4+ comprised of Janart, Martin, Max Bresolin, Tristan MacHale, and Ally Sullivan as Coxswain. They had a tail wind in the morning and the second best time in the heats to advance to a two-boat final in the late afternoon. Then facing a headwind, Rye came in second behind Norwalk.
The girls’ Novice 8, with six new rowers, won their heat, but there were no finals. The rowers that day were Samantha Carter, coxswain, Isabelle Hentschel, Chiara Biow, Claudia Hentschel, Hannah Krapes, Maddie Pankoff, Allie Pollard, Nora Friedmann, and Sophia Desantis.
Coach Jen Palermo was extremely pleased with her team’s performance. She was especially proud of her novice girls, many of whom were racing for the first time.
Their next regatta is The Mercer Sprints at Mercer Lake, New Jersey on April 19.
