When Rye senior quarterback Charlie Brady limped off the field early in the first quarter last Friday in Mount Vernon, Garnet coaches, teammates, and supporters all whispered quietly to themselves, “Hope that’s not serious.”
Turns out it was.
After an injury suffered during a somewhat awkward one-on-one tackle, Brady was diagnosed with a torn ACL this week, effectively ending his senior athletic year.
Brady is one of the leaders of the defending New York Class A state champion Rye football team. More than that, he’s a great kid.
Injuries are always a risk in athletics, particularly in high-contact sports, but this one is particularly painful.
Brady, who was also named a senior captain for this year’s defending state champion lacrosse team, is bound for Harvard next fall to play lacrosse.
The good news? It’s 2026, not 1982. Surgical techniques have improved dramatically in recent decades. Rehabilitation timelines, depending on the severity of injury, are much more encouraging than back in the day.
Although Brady will miss the remainder of his high school sports career, he has plenty of academic and athletic success to look forward to at Harvard and beyond.
The Rye Record and the Rye community wish Charlie and his family a full recovery.
