There were some bright spots for Rye’s softball team in its season opener against Harrison on Tuesday, but the Garnets fell 15-5.

Rye started and finished strong, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, then took the lead with a five-run second inning. The Garnets’ final two runs came in the sixth and seventh.

Junior Penelope Gilmore and senior Ava Rollano both went 3-for-3, and junior Caroline Joyce had a pair of hits. The trio accounted for eight of Rye’s 10 hits.

It was a tough welcome to Class AA for the Garnets, who moved up from Class A after playing in the section quarterfinals a season ago. Last year, Harrison went 20-3 and lost by one run in the Section 1 Class AA championship game.

Rye plays again at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pearl River, the team that ended the Garnets’ season in the quarterfinals a season ago. The Pirates are off to a 2-0 start.
