In one of the most dominant performances of the year for Rye sports, the Garnet softball team beat Pelham 19-0 on Thursday.

Rye (2-4) scored all of its runs in the first three innings before the game ended on a run rule in the fifth. Both of the Garnets’ wins this season have come against the hapless Pelicans, who the Garnets beat 14-5 two weeks ago.

Junior Caroline Joyce went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Penelope Gilmore went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, and sophomore Olivia Hodes was 2-for-2 with one run driven in. Juniors Reese McGill and Clara Meszkat also logged multi-hit games.

Rye’s first seven batters all got on base in an eight-run first inning. Gilmore led off with a double, McGill and Sophiah Collins singled, Joyce doubled, Meszkat reached first on an error, and eighth-grader Georgina Gilmore walked.

Hodes and Penelope Gilmore then drove in two runs apiece with singles, all before Rye got its third out of the game.

In the second inning, Joyce and Meszkat singled, then senior Charlotte Dinger doubled to make it 11-0.

McGill, Joyce, Meszkat, and junior Rosie Zicherman all singled in the third, and the Pelicans walked six batters in a seven-run inning.

Georgina Gilmore pitched a shutout for her first varsity win, striking out five batters in the process.

“Moving forward, [the focus] is to just be a bit more consistent with our play,” said Rye coach Alex Tejera. “Try our best to compete in every game and give us a chance to win.”

Rye looks to win consecutive games for the first time this season, when the team travels to Mahopac for a stand-alone, non-league game at 11 a.m. Saturday.
