The Rye softball team got off to an encouraging start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning of their season opener. But it didn’t take long for Nyack to rain on their parade.
The RedHawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, and seven total in the first four innings, to win 7-3 Tuesday at Nyack High School.
Junior Tessa Labovitz got the scoring started with a two-run RBI single in the first for Rye. Nyack scored seven straight runs before freshman Reese McGill picked up an RBI in the sixth for Rye.
Other Garnets to log hits were sophomore Caroline Joyce, Clara Meszkat, and freshman Emma Stark.
Joyce also pitched for the Garnets, allowing nine hits and seven runs (five earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking two. Rye plays its home opener at 5 p.m. Friday against Pearl River. The Garnets play four games in the first week of April before going to Florida for spring training April 13-18.
