Rye softball scored nine first-inning runs Friday, coasting to a 15-2 victory at Scarsdale.

It was a complete team victory, as 12 Garnets combined for 17 hits before the game ended on a run rule in the fifth inning.

“Everyone really hit the ball well, we played good defense, we had timely hitting, we ran the bases really well — it was just a really good game overall,” said Rye coach Alex Tejera. “That’s always a good thing when you’re able to bat around and score so many runs right away. That really is a boost for the team.”

Junior Penelope Gilmore had two doubles in the first inning, going 2-for-3 on the day with two RBIs. Sophomore Sophiah Collins also went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, and seniors Ava Rollano and Charlotte Dinger each had three-hit games.

Eighth-grade pitcher Gigi Gilmore secured the win with a complete game — allowing six hits, two earned runs, and striking out seven. She was also 2-for-2 offensively with two RBIs.

Tejera commended Gigi Gilmore’s performance on the mound and overall improvement as the season rolls on.

“She was able to get herself out of jams when she needed to,” Tejera said. “She also struck out seven today in only five innings, so that’s always a good sign. As the year progresses, she keeps getting better and better, so that’s great to see her developing more and more with each game.”

In the two weeks left of the regular season, the team’s focus in practice remains the same: to limit the mental mistakes and stay present.

“Physical mistakes are going to happen,” Tejera said, “but if we can limit the mental mistakes, that usually allows us to be in every game.”

Rye (3-5) faces Mamaroneck at home Saturday, then plays four games next week, starting with a trip to White Plains at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
