Rye Stories of Love: A Daring Young Man on a Flying Trapeze

Our playful flirting became a regular part of my trapeze routine.

It all began 20 years ago one warm day in May at Trapeze School NY, on the pier in downtown Manhattan. I was a Queens native living in Westchester as a graduate student, and before I even took my first class, I bought a 10-class pack, knowing I would love it.

On my first day, while I was stretching, a hot, flying trapeze instructor walked up to me and asked, “Did you find your Qi (chi)?” He wasn’t teaching that class, but we started crossing paths every week, and our playful flirting became a regular part of my trapeze routine. The funny part is that I used some of my school loan money to pay for that expensive hobby, but it was worth every penny, even with interest.

I found out Ronnie was also a Queens native and had grown up just a few miles from me. He finally asked me on a date to hike at Bear Mountain on the Fourth of July. We have been together ever since. Twenty years later, we plan our vacations around places that offer trapeze, like Club Getaway or Club Med.
