Rye’s volleyball season is at its halfway point, and things couldn’t be going much better.
With a 3-1 win over Mahopac on Monday and a sweep of Ardsley on Tuesday, the Garnets extended their win streak to eight and entered October with a 9-1 record.
The win over Ardsley is especially significant considering how close each set was — 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 — arguably making the Panthers the Garnets’ fiercest league opponent thus far.
“That was a big game. Ardsley is always a great competitor,” said Rye coach Geri Jones. “They’re at a higher caliber — beating them in three sets was huge.”
Senior libero Emma Lunstead had 27 digs, and junior setter Amelie Modesto recorded 26 assists.
“There was a guy here who teaches at Ardsley, but I used to coach with him at Mamaroneck,” Jones said. “He came over and he said, ‘Man, your libero and your setter are special.’ I said, ‘Yes, they are.’”
The Garnets will take the rest of the week to practice before their next match Monday against Somers. With senior middle Olivia Lewis out with an ankle injury, a focus for Jones in the interim is working with junior middle Carly Woods to fill her role in the offense.
“We need to make her offensively strong,” Jones said. “So, we’re going to focus the next few days on our middle hitters, and our hitters hitting line more than they’re hitting … Defensively, we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing.”
