A 66-year-old Rye woman who was arrested for obtaining hundreds of painkillers is due in court next week, according to Rye police.
Kathleen Gerety-Gianguzzi was arrested on Oct. 9 after allegedly receiving a package that contained 180 Carisoprodol pills at the Rye Post Office without a prescription, police said.
She was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree and is scheduled to make her first appearance in Rye City Court on Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.
Carisoprodol is a medication used to treat “acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions,” according to the National Institutes of Health research center. While it’s marketed as a muscle relaxer, it’s actually technically classified as a tranquilizer.
Rye Police Detective Lt. Michael Anfuso told The Record that Gerety-Gianguzzi was caught through an “in-house detective investigation,” not reported by the post office. Anfuso said she allegedly obtained the medication from online “dark websites” and overseas pharmacies.
Gerety-Gianguzzi is a nurse, according to her Instagram page, however Anfuso said she self-identified as unemployed during her arrest. She suddenly lost her husband of 29 years in 2021 when he was just 62 years old, according to an obituary in The Rye Record. She also lost her mother earlier this year.
The family had previously owned and operated Gann Realty, which served Rye and Port Chester for nearly 40 years, her mother’s obituary states.
