According to junior Brian Gardner, the Rye High varsity wrestling team is “gelling, but the forfeits are definitely hurting us.”
A home loss to Harrison last week bumped their record to 1-8; however, there are some bright spots on the team this season. Junior Fritz Zahringer, wrestling at 152 pounds, beat Harrison’s captain, David Polakoff, and was one of three Rye wrestlers in that match to claim victory, along with eighth grader Miles Giordano and sophomore John Arenas.
Rye followed up the Harrison match with a victory January 16 at Mount Vernon High School, where Zahringer, Jackson Kligerman, and Shane O’Malley helped Rye win its second match of the season. Over the weekend, the Garnets wrestled in the Edgemont Invitational tournament, where Gardner and Arenas each placed third in their weight classes. They were set to host Fox Lane at home post-deadline. Divisional playoffs begin February 2.
