Rye’s boys and girls basketball teams both won playoff openers Saturday, and return to the court for section quarterfinal games Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Garnet hockey team takes the ice Friday for its first postseason contest after receiving a bye and the No. 1 seed.
The third-seeded Rye girls (17-4) host No. 6 Suffern at 5 p.m. Wednesday, and the fifth-seeded boys (16-5) travel to take on No. 4 Horace Greeley at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Chappaqua. Both teams are one win away from returning to Westchester County Center for the section semifinals.
The Garnet hockey team, which was originally scheduled to host a section semifinal Wednesday, will now open the postseason Friday due to weather delays. Top-seeded Rye (15-2-3) will host Pawling or Carmel at Playland.
Before the postseason runs began, and before February blizzards extended Rye High School’s winter break into a second week, a pep rally celebrated all of the Garnets’ regular-season successes and amped the teams up for section tournament play.
Students packed the gym to cheer on the Garnet basketball and hockey teams, which all enter the upcoming Section 1 tournament with high seeds.
Highlights of the rally included musical chairs on the court, and a teachers vs. seniors basketball game.
