Rye native and former Iona Prep baseball star Colin Moran was selected sixth overall by the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball’s June 6 draft. Moran played his college ball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he started at third base for three years. He won ACC Freshman of the Year honors, and later earned a First Team All-ACC selection. This past season, he led the Tar Heels to the College World Series, while hitting well over .300 on the campaign.
Moran’s uncle, and former Rye High School baseball standout, B.J. Surhoff, was taken with the first pick 28 years ago by the Milwaukee Brewers. Moran told The Daily News that the whole draft experience was “surreal” and that he is excited to be a Marlin.
