In one of the last Board of Education meetings of the school year, the room was packed with middle school students, high school athletes, and parents, there to celebrate the winners of the district’s yearly Extra Mile awards. Three members of the staff and faculty received Extra Mile awards for their dedication and success.
Girls’ basketball Coach Mary Henwood, who for 26 years coached one successful Rye High team after another, was honored first. Henwood is retiring as a coach, but will remain a middle school physical education teacher. “I’ve been blessed to work in an incredible district,” she said. Board member Kendall Egan, who presented Henwood with the award, said she was particularly impressed when at a recent sports banquet, student-athletes from other area teams gathered to congratulate Henwood on her retirement.
Craig Dreves, RMS teacher and Reach Out Rye adviser, and Elaine Cuglietto, District Clerk and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, were the other Extra Mile award winners.
Outgoing School Board member Josh Nathan praised Cuglietto for her incredible aplomb in overseeing three elections during the school year.
Dreves was lauded for his creation of Reach Out Rye, which gives students a chance to participate in charitable works each year.
