On June 7, the School of the Holy Child community joined together to celebrate their 105th commencement exercises and applaud the achievements of the 53 graduating seniors.
Head of School William C. Hambleton, Ed.D., commended the students for their exemplary work and spirit. “I have no doubt that in time, we will hear of the many achievements of this class. There will also be times in your lives when you stand firm in your convictions, yet receive no reward for your integrity. Do not underestimate the value of these achievements. It’s precisely in these moments that your greatness begins to sneak up on you.”
This year, Holy Child welcomed Christina Hanlon Wielgus, a celebrated women’s collegiate basketball coach and a member of the class of 1970, back to campus to deliver the commencement address. Ms. Wielgus currently serves as the assistant women’s basketball coach at UMass, Amherst. An elite coach at Fordham and Dartmouth, she recorded 14 League Championships (12 in the IVY league), one Patriot League Title, seven NCAA Tournament appearances, and a pair of WNIT berths. She finished her tenure with the Big Green as the winningest head coach in the history of Dartmouth women’s basketball, amassing 393 victories and 20 winning seasons over 28 campaigns at the helm of the program. Chris Wielgus has been inducted into three Hall of Fames, and was named an icon of the game of basketball in 2013.
In her address to students, she said, “The world needs women who are savvy and knowledgeable enough to navigate life’s hard path. We need ‘doers’ who have the courage to risk failure in order to make a difference. Thanks to your parents and the School of the Holy Child, you have the education and talent to make that difference. You leave here not only armed with the tools and the moral compass to make a difference, but with the prayers and support of everyone in this community.”
