The students were great teachers, according to Ms. Sweeney. “The seniors enjoyed learning about the Smartboard,” she said. One senior joked, “What happened to the chalk?” Another acknowledged that “technology sure has changed” since he was in elementary school.

The following week, the third graders paid the Rye Seniors a visit at Rye Rec. They interviewed more than a few good men, learning about their military service, their travels, and their careers.

When asked what they’d learned, students were quick to answer:

“I was amazed that he came from India and that he was a pilot!”img 9745

“I learned they all still like sports and sometimes root for the same teams.”

“What amazed me was that he was stabbed in World War II, and is still alive!”

“I learned that Mr. Rich used to run a nursery and flower shop where Nursery Field is today.”

“What amazed me was that he has lived in Rye for 40 years. I wonder how long I will live in Rye.”
